GRIMSTONE NPC OVERVIEW
Character conversations are one of the main narrative delivery methods used to convey Grimstone Valley's story. As such, it was important that these characters be physically represented in the game. There are six NPCs the player can interact with and talk to over the course of the game: Beth, Ruby, Ezra, Bishop Micah, Ephraim, and Dippy the Railman.
As the team's main 3D character artist, I modeled and rigged each character in Blender, using the player's model and rig as a base to expedite the process. I created custom idle animations for Ruby and Beth in Blender, while the remaining characters utilize a variety of pre-made Mixamo animations. Finally, I implemented each character in Unity, ensuring their animations and textures worked properly.
FROM CONCEPT TO MODEL
Grimstone Valley's NPCs were designed by the team's main 2D artist, Connor Dunn; it was my job to translate these characters into 3D. One of the game's main artistic inspirations was the animated short The Backwater Gospel, which inspired the more segmented models and the planar 2D approach to elements like the hair and accessories.
